In recognition of their influential career in the city’s music scene, Detroit City Council member Mary Waters will award 5 ELA a Spirit Of Detroit Award on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at 10am inside the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, Suite 1340. Accepting the award will be Reginald “Mudd” Moorer on behalf of 5 ELA, a Hip Hop group that included their late co-founding member DeShaun “Proof” Holton and production from James “J Dilla” Yancey.

5 ELA (5 Elementz) have been pioneers for Detroit Hip Hop culture since the 1990s rap movement that birthed global superstars, including J Dilla, Slum Village, and Eminem, each of whom began their careers deeply unified with 5 ELA. The trio of Proof, Mudd, and Bernard “Thyme” Russell were a premier Hip Hop act stemming from the famed days of The Hip Hop Shop, the West 7 Mile retail space from fashion designer Maurice Malone, where the three young men served as key employees and hosts of the legendary Saturday open mics that brought hundreds of youth artists together in the spirit of Motown’s music legacy.

Today, their extensive music catalog remains a favorite of underground Hip Hop fans globally. Known for conscious lyrics and an entrepreneurial spirit, 5 ELA was at the heart of the era’s youth spiritual movement known as The Order Of Divine Reality, which promoted
interdisciplinary religious education, business and community building, and the power of mindfulness and resilience in the midst of the city’s social challenges. Honoring the legacy of his group is paramount for Mudd, who continues his music journey as a solo recording artist and manager of 5 ELA’s catalog, in addition to being a father of three daughters.
